Nexi Jones—part witch, part guardian, and wannabe kick-ass warrior—can’t throw a punch or conjure the simplest magic. But that doesn’t stop her from hunting the werewolves who slaughtered her human family. She’ll have her revenge, but only if Kyden, the elite guardian, would get the hell out of her way.

Kyden can’t decide if Nexi wants to get herself killed or if she just has no clue what she’s doing. But her father made it clear: keep Nexi safe…or else. Of course, the more Nexi runs toward revenge, the more she needs Kyden’s aid, and as she grows into her power and confidence, so does his desire to protect her. The only problem? She’d rather he dropped dead.

But when a vampire paints a bull’s-eye on Nexi’s back, she’s hard-pressed to deny Kyden and the help he’s offering. Even if it means getting her revenge will be a little bit harder. At least it will still be as sweet.

My Review:

The series title, Magic & Mayhem, might have made a better title for this story than Werewolves Be Damned. At least it would have made a little more sense. And this first story in Stacey Kennedy’s new urban fantasy series needed some. Or at least a bit more explanation in its worldbuilding.

Nexi Jones’ story starts with a bang. We find this 21st century woman in the middle of a fight between werewolves and medieval knights, both making sure she stays alive as the werewolves kill the people she believes are her parents. She’s confused and so are the readers. Or at least this reader. Especially when the prologue ends with a classic reveal…the victims were not her birth parents. One of those medieval knights was her father. Of course the poor woman passes out. Wouldn’t you?

From there, we’ve got three stories running more or less in parallel, and the race is uneven. The good thing is that any one of the three would be a kick-ass story. The unfortunate thing is that there may be one too many threads, and they don’t quite braid together evenly.

Nexi Jones isn’t who she believed she was, and the world isn’t what she thought it was, either. So thread number one is her search for identity. Guarding the human world that she knew are, well, Guardians, those medieval knights she saw before she passed out. And yes, Nexi, one of them really is your father. Lucky for her, they are the good guys, but one of them has a whole lot of ‘splainin’ to do.

Her mother was a witch, the other half of those ‘good guys’. And mom is really dead, though exactly how that happened and why that tragedy led dad to hide Nexi in the human world without her powers isn’t fully explained. But now that she’s been found, she has to put on her big girl supernatural pants and learn how to use those powers, fast. Again, Nexi’s journey-story.

There is something powerful about Nexi being the only Guardian/Witch half-breed, but not enough detail on the how and why.

Nexi wants revenge on the werewolves who murdered her adoptive parents, so she needs training in how to use her powers. The Guardian who signs up to train her, let’s just say that he does it because he wants to stick around Nexi and figure out whether being near her will get her out of his system, or whether he can turn their love/hate relationship more to the love side of that equation for both of them.

Last, and very definitely not least, those werewolves did not attack Nexi’s family at random. It was all part of a long-term plan on the part of someone who has had the Guardian Council in his sights for a long time. Nexi’s new-found powers are a key part of his nefarious schemes.

Escape Rating B-: I wish this one had decided to stick with Nexi’s journey, and saved the love story for a later book. The world that Stacey Kennedy is creating has the potential for a lot of depth, with tons of interesting background and cool stories, but I felt shortchanged on the fantasy side by having things go almost straight to the love story. Nexi (and this reader) needed to know more about who she was, where she came from and how the Guardians’ world meshed with the Earth she knew before she gave herself to someone. My 2 cents.

We also don’t know enough about Kyden (Lexi’s other half) to really understand who he is and why Nexi falls in love with him. There are depths there, but we don’t get the chance to learn them. The love story happens too fast and too soon.

Reading Werewolves Be Damned, I felt like I had been dropped into the middle of a much bigger story than the one that I got. Especially when I finished and discovered that even the title is a red herring.

Tess Jennings, who has been gifted with the ability to see ghosts, struggles to help the Grand Master of the Animus, Alexander, cross over. She might even have discovered who murdered him, but she has no way to prove it.

Adding to her pile of failures, Tess must accept a harsh reality—she has officially run out of time. The closer she gets to an answer to save her ghost lover, Kipp McGowen, the more she’s realizing she’s been searching for an answer she didn’t want to find.

Tess will have to make difficult choices, and her decisions will lead to consequences she cannot predict. Will Kipp finally take a living breath again, or will Tess take her last and join him in the Netherworld forever?

My Review:

The Frostbite series by Stacey Kennedy (Supernaturally Kissed, Demonically Tempted, Mystically Bound and finally Eternally Devoted) is a wonderful urban fantasy/paranormal romance series.

Supernaturally Kissed by Stacey KennedyInstead of boy meets girl, or vampire meets girl, or whatever might float your paranormal boat, in Supernaturally Kissed we have Tess and Kipp, girl meets ghost. She tries to ignore him–then she tries to help him cross over.

But Kipp isn’t just any ghost. He’s a Memphis cop. Ghosts can’t cross until they resolve whatever is keeping them here, and Kipp needs to solve his last case. So Tess helps. And in the process of helping Kipp, the former bad boy cop and good girl clerk fall in love.

Talk about star-crossed lovers!

Kipp refuses to cross when the case is over. Tess has become his new piece of unfinished business in the world of the living. Or so they both think.

The road from that first unfinished case to Eternally Devoted has been fraught with danger. Tess has discovered that her involvement with the supernatural is much more than just the ability to see ghosts. She can help the police, she can help the ghosts.

It can also be dangerous.

And Tess and Kipp have a real chance at happiness. In the real world.

But before that can happen, she has to solve a murder of the leader of the Animus, a secret supernatural community. Maybe she’ll be able to return Kipp to his body, if she provides the right answers.

And maybe they’ll both be trapped in the Netherworld.

The Animus are so secretive she can’t tell which are her friends, and which are her enemies. But if Tess doesn’t find out soon, all of her friends could end up dead protecting her.

And Kipp might be lost forever.

Escape Rating A-: The series as a whole is awesome. You really, really want Tess and Kipp to find their happy ending. Tess has worked incredibly hard for it.

One of the amazing things in the series is that Tess is the one rescuing Kipp. He’s a ghost for the entire series and can’t act in the real world. She has to do the heavy lifting.

Mystically Bound by Stacey KennedyI did figure out who the “bad actors” were very early on in Mystically Bound. One of the motives was murkier than was apparent, but both of the “who” parts were pretty easy to determine. Tess was more forgiving than human nature would warrant, in my opinion. YMMV.

But, they do get their HEA. I won’t spoil the how, where and why. It’s earned, and all the loose ends are wrapped up. Thank goodness. I don’t think my heart could have taken another one of Stacey’s positively diabolical cliffhangers.

Tess Jennings’ life is in chaos. Her ghost lover, Kipp McGowen, vanished into the Netherworld without a trace. Now, she finds herself in White Castle, Louisiana, surrounded by the Animus—a secret society of the supernaturally gifted. To make matters
worse, they present her with an offer she cannot refuse.

If she helps solve the murder of their Grand Master, they will assist her in saving Kipp. Soon, Tess will land herself lost in another mystery she doesn’t want. But she will have to trust her enemies to gain what she most desires—a life with Kipp.

Only problem? People are hiding secrets and dark pasts. Tess will soon discover that nothing is as it seems. She might want to save Kipp from his ghostly state, but someone has decided it’s better for her to join him…

My Review:

I didn’t want to start reading Stacey Kennedy’s Mystically Bound until after I got a copy of Eternally Devoted. I just knew Stacey was going to end this thing in another one of her diabolical cliffhangers, and I was right. I won’t spoil the ending regarding the nature of the cliffhanger, but I will say to save yourself the agony and if you like her Frostbite series, just get both books and save yourself the agony.

Supernaturally Kissed by Stacey KennedyMystically Bound picks up right where Demonically Tempted left off. Which was after one of those damnable cliffhangers. This series has to be read in order, so start with Supernaturally Kissed. And fair warning, it is impossible to talk about Mystically Bound without revealing details from the first two books. If you haven’t read them and don’t want spoilers for them, take a look at the reviews for Supernaturally Kissed here and/or Demonically Tempted here instead.

So Mystically Bound starts out with Tess in White Castle, Louisiana (no town should be named White Castle, I kept thinking of the little square hamburgers). She’s in White Castle because that’s where the Animus is, and they might be able to help her get Kipp’s spirit back into his body, providing she helps them first.

And providing she can locate Kipp’s spirit in the Netherworld. She knows exactly where his body is now. It’s in the hospital, in Memphis, in a coma. That’s why his ghost never acted like all the other ghosts.

Kipp’s not dead. Not yet, anyway.

But the former leader of the supernaturally gifted, a group known as the Animus, is dead. They need Tess to talk to Alexander’s ghost and find out who killed him. but it’s not quite that simple.

Nothing has been that simple since the day Kipp’s ghost drifted into her life.

Escape Rating B+: The Frostbite story as a whole is all about Tess’ relationship with Kipp. There isn’t a whole lot of Kipp in this book, so that’s kind of a downer.

eternally devoted by Stacey kennedyIt was all too easy to figure out who both of the “bad actors” were long before they were revealed in Eternally Devoted. One person’s motives were clearer than the other, but who they were was just a shade too obvious.

This may be me geeking out just a bit, but having the supernatural society named “the Animus” didn’t sound or feel right to me. My mind kept going to either the dictionary definition of animus or the old psychological concepts of anima and animus. Neither may have been meant, but both went to wrong contexts in my head.

Because I read Mystically Bound and Eternally Devoted back to back, the cliffhanger wasn’t as frustrating as it might have been. On the other hand, Mystically Bound felt like half a book. I enjoyed it, but not only did I know it wasn’t over, it felt like the first part of a two-part episode–the story didn’t feel finished.

I’m very glad I waited until the final book was out before I read this one.

But in celebration of April Fools’ Day, I’m holding my review of Eternally Devoted until Wednesday. It’s not up there with the cliffhanger that Stacey ended the book on, but it’s what I’ve got.

Stacking the Shelves

This week my shelf contains a “sweet 16” stack of books. Think of it as my contribution to NCAA “March Madness” even though both of my schools are out of the running this year.

Supernaturally Kissed by Stacey KennedyNow that I mention sweetness, the books that were the sweetest to get were Mystically Bound and Eternally Devoted, the final (I hope final) books in Stacey Kennedy’s Frostbite series. Stacey has this diabolical tendency to end her stories on nail-biting cliffhangers, so I’ve been waiting for Eternally Devoted to be released before I got Mystically Bound. Stacey sent review copies, so I’ll finally get to see if Tess and Kipp get their elusive happily ever after. If you have fond memories of the movie Ghost, start this series with the fantastic Supernaturally Kissed and prepare to see the trope marvelously reversed.

Guest Post: This or That with Stacey Kennedy + Giveaway

I’m so happy to welcome Stacey Kennedy back to Reading Reality! Since Stacey has been here before, this time she’s doing something just a bit different. And that’s so appropriate, since Stacey’s paranormal romances are also just a bit different, but in a totally fun way. See today’s review of The Cat’s Meow to find out just how much fun her latest one is!

But her guest post is also just for fun. It’s a “This or That” list. Take a look and you’ll see whether Stacey likes this…or that.

Marlene: Coke or Pepsi?

Stacey: Pepsi over ice…YUM!

Marlene: Coffee or Tea?

Stacey: I have no hesitation in admitting that I am 100% addicted to coffee.

Marlene: Now that I’ve gotten the important drinks questions out of the way…Morning person or Night owl?

Stacey: Night Owl. It’s honestly a problem. My body seriously hates to go to sleep early and my kids wake up at 6 a.m.—you can see the problem, right?

Marlene: Plotter or Pantser?

Stacey: Panster for the win! Even if I try to plot, I never follow it, so it’s pointless. But sometimes on those longer novels, I outline just to keep everything organized.

Marlene: Do ahead or procrastinate?

Stacey: Oh, I would totally be a procrastinator, but I know better. If I dared to be lazy, I would get swallowed whole by my workload. I have to always keep moving forward or life would get a wee bit crazy. Or crazier than it already is, I should say.

Marlene: Oscar or Felix? (The Odd Couple, are you a slob or do you clean up
everything?)

Stacey: I’m a total Felix, but maybe have a little Oscar in me, too. I like things neat and tidy, but if that means tossing whatever in a closet so I don’t have to look at it, that’s okay, too.

Marlene: Homebody or Adventurer?

Stacey: Total homebody! I love my family and friends, and I love spending all my time with them. Plus, I’m a total chicken when it comes to adventurous things.

Marlene: Print books or ebooks?

Stacey: I used to be a print book kinda gal, but then I ran out of room to store them. So now, I love my ebooks! I keep the print buying for when I go to conferences and can have my favorite authors sign the books.

Marlene: Heroes or Anti-heroes?

Stacey: I’m a sucker for a sexy hero!

Marlene: Cats or Dogs?

Stacey: Dogs. Just don’t tell my 3 cats that!

I hate to tell you this, Stacey, but they probably already know. Cats rule, dogs drool. And cats have sneaky ways of reminding you at every opportunity. At least mine do.

The Cat’s Meow by Stacey Kennedy
Witch’s Brew Book One

A good witch always has a kick-ass back-up plan.

Libby is an Enchantress—a witch gifted by the Goddess to conjure spells. When a magical presence is detected around a recent string of feline slayings, Libby takes the case to uncover the reasons behind the odd deaths. Much to her displeasure, the coven also sends a sexy warlock, Kale, to assist her.

While having the muscle around proves to be useful, fighting the attraction between them is worse than a hex, especially considering Kale is keeping secrets. But soon, Libby has bigger problems than the elusive warlock when her spells turn up clues that point to something far more sinister than slaughtered cats.

Now Libby has landed herself in the midst of an uprising. She trusts no one and isn’t safe—not from the warlocks stirring up trouble. Not from the worrisome rebellion she can’t escape. And certainly not from Kale, who is weaving a very dangerous spell over her heart.

My Review:

Those poor cats. They gave their all to set the stage for this sizzling paranormal romance. Even I think it was a worthy sacrifice. (Don’t worry, this is not as bad as it sounds. Really.)

Libby is an Enchantress who doesn’t trust warlocks. While she has good reason for her mistrust, it does put her in one heck of a fix. Warlocks ooze sex appeal, it’s part of their power. And her coven has assigned her one while she investigates a sudden surge in magically-related feline deaths.

There hasn’t been ritual cat slaying in Charleston in months, so four popping up all at once has alarmed the coven. Libby’s their one and only Enchantress, so that automatically puts her on the case.

But Libby doesn’t have a clue why they’ve set the mysterious Kale to guard her while she figures out what’s going on. She’s sure it’s some kind of test. That they’re looking for an excuse to get rid of her because she’s rubbed them the wrong way one too many times. Make that one dozen too many times.

Even if her mother is one of the Priestesses of the coven, Libby’s sure they’re just checking up on her.

And even her connection with her Goddess tells her that Kale is hiding a whole bunch of secrets from her. If there’s one thing she can’t stand, it’s a warlock playing her. She’s been there and done that, and will fight tooth and claw to keep from going there again.

It turns out that Libby was right about that test. Just very, very wrong about exactly who is doing the testing. And that warlock who played her before…he’s doing it again…just not in the romantic sense this time.

The stakes are much, much higher than that.

Escape Rating A-:This was a fantastic paranormal romance/urban fantasy! The worldbuilding was also really well done. It felt a tiny bit like Buffy, not because they were teenagers, but the whole need to patrol the city to keep evil from getting a toe-hold. That need for “constant vigilance”.

The relationship between Libby and Kale is not just hot, but they have terrific chemistry and I love the unresolved/unrelieved sexual tension that absolutely permeates the whole story. They can’t resolve what they feel because Libby has a ton of issues about warlocks and Kane knows he’s keeping back too many secrets. He wants something real with Libby, and it can’t be real if he’s lying by omission. So he holds back. And she’s completely conflicted. She likes him when he’s honest, but he’s honest so seldom that she doesn’t trust him.

Sex appeal is part of a warlock’s natural “bag of tricks”. Libby can’t always tell whether what she feels is because she’s being played, or because she really feels it. Her caution is totally justified.

The reveal was a complete surprise. Not about who the evil dude was. I guessed that. And I guessed that Libby was being tested for bigger things. But the nature of exactly what things. And exactly how evil evil turned out to be, along with the fact that Libby’s testers had way underestimated pretty much everything was particularly cool. I always love seeing pomposity get popped.

I’m looking forward to more stories in this world. I’m very happy to see that this is labeled as #1 in a series. Bring on brew #2!

Author Interview: Stacey Kennedy is Mystically Bound

Today’s interview was my chance to buttonhole Stacey Kennedy about her writing, her utterly marvelous paranormal/urban fantasy Frostbite series (see my reviews of the first two books, Supernaturally Kissed and Demonically Tempted to get an idea of just how fantastic they are) and ask some questions about the totally damnable cliffhanger at the end of Demonically Tempted. (Grrr!) The next book in the series, Mystically Bound, can’t come soon enough for this reader.

Since I’m dying to let everyone see the answers to those questions, here’s Stacey!

Tell us a little bit about Stacey Kennedy? Who are you when you’re not writing? Really?

If I’m not writing I’m a mom and wife. My time is split right down the middle between both of my “jobs”. So, if I’m not on the keyboard then I’m playing Barbies, making silly crafts, or spending the day at park. I love the outdoors, and the second summer hits we like to go camping as often as we can, which usually works out to 2-3 times a month. What can I say? I love campfires and s’mores!!

Other than that, I love to have fun and laugh! I love movies, girl’s night out where I’m up way too late, patios with lots of chicken wings and beer, reading, and just all that crazy stuff that girls like to do! I like to party and I love to dance! I’m always up for a good time!!

Who first introduced you to the love of reading?

Good question. To be honest, I’m not sure how I was first introduced to reading. I’m sure school played a part, but my mom reads about as much as I do. So, I imagine she rubbed off on me. But she never pushed reading or anything like that. I think it more or less grew on me. Now I can totally admit that I’m 100% addicted!

Who influenced your decision to become a writer?

Of course, books influenced me the most. My love for storytelling came because the stories I read captivated me. I suppose you could say they awakened my love of getting lost in another world. It was from reading that I got the itch to write my stories and create my own fun worlds.

But my hubby was so supportive when I came out of nowhere and said I was going to write a story. While I expected him to roll his eyes at me and call it silly since I’d never shown an interest before, he actually said that he thought I’d be great at it. It was his support that gave me the push to sit down and do it!

What book do you recommend everyone should read? Okay, now tell us why you picked that book!

It’s gotta be Keri Arthur’s, Riley Jenson Guardian series. And no, I can’t pick one book from that series to recommend. They’re all fantastic. If you like fast-paced action, heartbreak, romance, and just a fabulous read pick up that series. It’s one of my all-time favorites!

Are you a plotter or a pantser? Do you plan everything or just let the story flow?

For most stories, I never plot or outline. I usually just sit down and let the characters tell the story. But for stories, like DEMONICALLY TEMPTED, I did have to outline that one because the plot was more complicated. There were certain points I needed to hit in that stories especially since they will have an impact on book three, MYSTICALLY BOUND.  I needed to see them out in front of me to make sure I wasn’t missing anything.

Usually I outline when my plot and subplots are complex. Also, if there are quite a few subplots working together I like to make sure I hit all the plot points, so having an outline helps me find the flow of the story. That’s normally how I do it. I write down the three major plot points with the biggest twists in the story, then work around them. But my outlines are very simple and in point form. Then with the guide to follow, I go panster style and write. Typically, my outlines are always changing.

Do your characters ever want to take over the story?

My characters own the show. I never have control! I accepted that a long time ago and stopped fighting against them because in the end the direction they take me always ends up being the right one.

Take Tess and Kipp for an example. When I had outlined DEMONICALLY TEMPTED it didn’t look at all like the finished product. Once I hit the halfway mark in that story, Tess took me in an entirely new direction and I let her go there, even though it hurt to do so! Now I’m happy of course, because I see how the series will play out and it’s going to be exciting!

Now let’s get specific. Did you always plan that for that damn cliffhanger-to-end-all-cliffhangers at the end of Demonically Tempted, or how did that come about?

“dliffhanger-to-end-all-cliffhangers” LOL! Like I said above, the cliffhanger was not my original idea for how that book would end. In fact, I had planned for an ending that was far different from how it turned out. To put it simply, I had originally planned for a much happier ending that wrapped up the “big” issue between Tess and Kipp. I can’t say more without spoiling the new ending, but I had intended for both Tess and Kipp to be very happy.

So, it was a fight not to go that route, but I eventually gave in and let the story go where it needed to. It was never my intention to torture Tess as much as she’s suffered in DEMONICALLY TEMPTED, and even more so what she’ll face in MYSTICALLY BOUND, but that shift in the story felt right.

What’s the reaction been to that cliffhanger? Do people beg you for details of how it’s going to turn out? Have you received any interesting bribes?

I actually received more of a reaction from the first book, SUPERNATURALLY KISSED, with everyone trying to figure out what was going on with Kipp. It did surprise me how many people had it guessed right away, while others were totally shocked by the ending of book two. There were four spots in the first book where I implied the “truth”. Some saw it, others didn’t. And isn’t that just fun!!

I admit I was slightly concerned how people would react to the cliffhanger at the end of DEMONICALLY TEMPTED, and while some people have wanted to hex me, they’ll forgive me as long as I don’t take too long to write the next book. It’s even better knowing that some people think they have it all figured out and that they know how Tess and Kipp will end up with their happily ever after, but I have lots of surprises coming up in the next book that should shock! Because heck, they’re shocking me now!!

If the series were turned into a movie (in your wildest dreams!) who would you want to play Tess and Kipp?

Without a doubt Paul Walker for Kipp and Rachel McAdams for Tess.

What plans do you have for the future (after Mystically Bound)?

I do plan to finish the Frostbite series in early 2013, which means I expect to release the 4th and final book in the series by February/March. But I just have to see how my schedule is first. There are many releases coming out in 2013 including my baby, WEREWOLVES BE DAMNED that is my first ever mass-market paperback, and I expect that series will eat up a lot of my time.  So, let’s just leave it at, 2013 will be a very exciting year with tons of fun releases!

Speaking of Mystically Bound, when in the Fall? I want to start counting days.

I’m glad you do!! I’m just as excited to write it. I’m aiming for the end of October and I hope nothing comes up that pushes me off that date. I’m starting to write Mystically Bound within the next week and am so eager to dive in!

Coffee or Tea?

I’m a coffee gal all the way. Starbucks is even better!

I want to thank Stacey for answering all my questions, and I may want to choke her for dragging out what sounds like will finally be Tess and Kipp’s happily ever after until book 4 (no one said I’d have to wait until book 4!!!!) of her awesome Frostbite series.

Patience is not one of my virtues, but I guess I’ll just have to wait. And congratulations on your upcoming paperback release of Werewolves Be Damned. It’s already on my “to-read” list on Goodreads.

I’m afraid to find out how long your new series will be. Very afraid. Because I just know I’m going to love it.

What’s On My (Mostly Virtual) Nightstand? AKA The Sunday Post 7-8-12

Looking at this week’s calendar, you’d never know there had been a holiday the previous week. Isn’t that funny?

Funny weird, not funny ha-ha.

We don’t give ourselves much of a break anymore, do we? I say that as a society, not necessarily as an individual. Your personal experience may vary.

It’s difficult to disconnect. Vacations aren’t stress free. We went away for a couple of days over the holiday, to Asheville, NC. We made a conscious decision not to take laptops. Howsomever, our iPads have 3G/4G. We still got email.

Semi-disconnected is the best we can do these days.

This week everything is totally reconnected and ON!

Monday, Ebook Review Central is back. Coverage returns with the Dreamspinner Press titles from May 2012. I’m kind of glad it’s two months back, it means the reviewers have had a chance to catch up to ERC. Barring the flu, there won’t be another hiatus until Labor Day weekend.

Unlike last week, there are three tours this week!

Tuesday is Hope’s day. Really, it’s the day for Hope’s Betrayal by Grace Elliot. I’ll have a guest post from Ms. Elliot, along with a review of her historical romance, Hope’s Betrayal. It’s all about smuggling along the coast of England during the Napoleonic Wars, and features a very unconventional heroine. You’ll see.

We go from the mists of time to the ghostly present with an interview with Stacey Kennedy on Wednesday. Stacey will be here to talk about her incredibly popular, and marvelously delicious, urban fantasy/paranormal romance Frostbite series. I’ve already reviewed Supernaturally Kissed and Demonically Tempted, and I can’t wait for Mystically Bound, so I absolutely jumped at the chance to interview Stacey for this tour.

And from the urban paranormal we move to a contemporary western ghost town on Thursday. Winter Creek, Montana is the ghost town. It’s also a modern-day living history exhibit that serves as the setting for Theresa Stillwagon’s paranormal romances Forgotten Memories and The Dressmaker’s Dilemma. I’ll be reviewing the first two books in her series as well as hosting her for an interview.

Last, but certainly not least, the Small Blogs Big Giveaways blog hop, hosted by Reading Romances, starts on Saturday, July 14. Reading Reality is one of the participating blogs. I’ll be giving away an Amazon Gift Card. No muss, no fuss, no shipping charges.

Looking ahead to next week (the week of July 16), I have a couple of books I need to make sure I finish.

Jeffe Kennedy will be here for The Rogue’s Pawn tour on July 19. This is the first book of her new urban fantasy series, The Covenant of Thorns. It looks like one of those stories where a contemporary character crosses into fae. Done well, that premise can be awesome. I have high hopes.

Another Carina Press title, The Ravenous Dead by Natasha Hoar is simply on my list because I loved her first book, The Stubborn Dead (review here). I mean really, what a concept for an urban fantasy series, The Order of Rescue Mediums? I have to see where she goes next with this.

And the one I absolutely, positively must finish, Hidden Things by Doyce Testerman. It’s one of my review for Library Journal this month. It didn’t even look like any genre I review when it dropped out of the envelope. But it’s published by Harper Voyager, so it must be somewhere in my area. I’ll find out, because my review it due to my editor on July 16.

Even if it doesn’t turn out to be fantasy Hidden Things looks way better than The Mongoliad turned out to be.

Does your week feel especially full after the July 4th lull? What are you up to on your blog this week?

Cover Reveal: Mystically Bound by Stacey Kennedy

Welcome, welcome, to the third book in the Frostbite series by Stacey Kennedy, Mystically Bound. Isn’t it gorgeous?

Frankly, after the way that Demonically Tempted ended, Mystically Bound can’t get here soon enough. The ending of Demonically Tempted just about killed me.

Here’s the blurb for Mystically Bound, just to whet your appetite:

Tess Jennings’ life is in chaos. Not only has her ghost lover, Kipp McGowen, crossed into the Netherworld, but she’s the newest member of a secret society. And they want her to start work immediately. Upon arriving at the Temple in New Orleans, she is presented with an offer she cannot refuse.

The Grand Master has been murdered and Tess must solve the crime by locating his ghost. The reward—a magical spell to save Kipp. But as Tess dives deeper into the case, the more danger surrounds her. Not everyone wants the murder solved, and she is caught in the crossfire.

Soon, Tess finds herself knee-deep in ancient magical rituals, a hunt for a spell, a race to locate a killer, and a journey to the beyond. Will Kipp finally take a living breath, or will Tess take her last?

If you’re not already a fan of Stacey Kennedy’s Frostbite series, what are you waiting for? (If you need a final push, take a look at my reviews of Kissed and Tempted.) Supernaturally Kissed and Demonically Tempted are a terrific blend of paranormal romance and urban fantasy. And all of us who are over here dying to know what happens next want the rest of you to come and join us in suspense.
