Favorite Heroines Giveaway Hop

favorite heroines

The Favorite Heroines Giveaway Hop is organized by The Herd Hops and hosted by Herding Cats & Burning Soup.

What makes a heroine? There are all sorts of ways to be a heroine. There are warrior heroines and princess heroines (sometimes those two things are combined) but there are also plenty of other ways.

In fantasy there is always the option of the wizard/sorceress/enchantress heroine. You know, someone who can light lamps with the flick of her fingers – or set the entire world on fire.

Contemporary stories also provide different ways to be a heroine – women can save lives through medicine or crime-fighting (or fire-fighting). Or they can just be the heroine for their own families or neighborhoods.

fellowship of the ring by tolkien old paperbackWhen I first read The Lord of the Rings, I was in grade school. I remember being annoyed because there were no women on that epic quest. I wanted there to be someone I could identify with in that motley crew. At the time, I was particularly wishing for a female wizard, but I could be flexible about it.

It’s 40 years later, and I’m still pissed that there was no kick-ass warrior woman on that journey.

On the other hand, I think that Harry Potter (and Ron Weasley) would have died an ignominious death early in The Sorceror’s Stone without Hermione. And I know I’m not the only one who thinks that. (But why she ended up with Ron I’ll never understand.)

talon of the hawk by jeffe kennedyJeffe Kennedy’s recent Twelve Kingdoms series features three different types of heroines – the oldest sister is the warrior princess, the middle sister is the magic practitioner, and the youngest sister becomes a goddess avatar. But they are all active heroines with agency. They also do a kick-ass job of showcasing the power of sisterhood.

I play videogames, and the Dragon Age series also contains a terrific group of different types of active and action heroines as well as allowing the player to choose the sex, race and job classification of their player/character hero or heroine. There is a scene early in Dragon Age: Inquisitionย where Cassandra, the warrior woman and Leliana, the spymistress, turn over the reins of power in a very public ceremony. When the player is female, the scene of two powerful women handing over those reins of power to a third equally powerful woman gives me chills every single time. (If you are curious, the sequence of events is captured in this Youtube vid)

And now it’s time for you to tell everyone who your favorite heroine (of any kind) is. Answer the question in the rafflecopter for your chance at either a $10 Gift Card or a book of your choice ($10 or under) from The Book Depository.

  13. It’s interesting how I associate heroines with the paranormal. In reality we have so many in everyday life. I once met Gloria Steinem at a conference and told her she was one of my heroines because she bravely moved forward in a man’s world. It wasn’t until after, when I worked as a phone tech in the 1970s that I realized how brave early feminists really were!

  14. Buffy. She carried the weight of the world on her shoulders but always confronted her problems with confidence and competence.

  15. I liked Lena from Delirium but especially in Pandemonium & Requiem. She grew so much in the trilogy!

  18. I have 2 favorites right now, both in series: Mercy Thompson from Patricia Briggs’ novels that start with Moon Called, and Toby Daye from Seanan McGuire’s fantastic series about the Fae in San Francisco. Both are strong women with some magic powers due to their heritage!

  19. Lucy from Love, Lucy by April Lindner because she took risks and went on an amazing trip!

Feyre from A Court of Thorns and Roses because she is amazing! She loves her family, she’s spunky, and she will do anything to protect those she loves.

    Thanks for the giveaway!

  20. Currently I’m reading the Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maas and I am just loving butt-kicking, emotionally repressed Celaena Sardothian. I love that she is strong and independent but also full of flaws and has many personal issues to resolve. Her character has such depth, just like real people. She struggles with doing what is right in the face of her own fears and demons.

  21. My favorite heroine is a toss up between Kami Glass from Sarah Rees Brennan (The Lynburn Legacy series) and Tris (Divergent series). Thanks for the great giveaway!! ๐Ÿ˜€

  22. My favorite heroines are loyal and loving. 27. Hermione Granger, when i was a kid i want be like her. because she is super smart, loyal, brave, and etc, she is awesome

    Thanks for the giveaway!

  37. Rachel Morgan from the Hollows series by Kim Harrison is one of my favorite heroines. She is smart, brave, and has a snarky sense of humor.

  38. My favorite heroine is Kahlan Amnell from the Sword of Truth series. She may have a mind destroying power but since it’s taxing after use she has to rely on her mind when fighting against warriors and magical beings.

  39. Kate Daniels is my favorite heroine, but I have a number of others I particularly enjoy, such as Mercy Thompson and Charley Davidson.

  40. Kate Daniels. Mostly because she’s tough as nails, but also compassionate. She does the right thing, even when it’s to her detriment and goes against all her early training.

(BTW, Marilyn, thanks for using that early Fellowship of the Ring cover in your post. That’s the version I first read and I could kick myself for giving my copies away. I wish I could find a set with those covers–or even the old poster of all 3 that I had on my wall!)
