Welcome to the Books to Movies Giveaway Hop, hosted by Bookhounds and I Am a Reader.

The theme here is pretty obvious, books that have been turned into movies. As popular as the release of a movie makes its originating book, there is also a meme that says “Never Judge a Book by its Movie”, which has a whole lot of truth in it.

The movie has to leave a lot of stuff out that was in the book. Translating a 300 page book into a movie probably gets a 12 hour movie, if not longer. And they might not even be a great 12 hours.

Rumor has it (also a ton of reviews) that the movie of The Martian might be better than the book. There’s always one exception that proves the rule. But usually, the book loses something in the translation. Don’t get me started on the translation of The Hobbit, which was a fairly short book, into three much-padded movies. On the other hand, I wouldn’t have minded a bit if The Lord of the Rings had been 4, 5 or even 6 movies instead of three. There is an awful lot of there, there, and a lot of it had to be cut.

  2. I think my most favorite would have to be The Green Mile by Stephen King. They did an excellent job on the movie.

  7. Of Mice and Men is one of my all time favorite books, and I love the movie as well. Actually both movies were good, the 1938 and 1992 film. But the version with Gary Sinise and John Malkovich is my favorite.

  9. Favorites include the Narnia and Hobbit series.

    Most hated includes just about any book by Stephen King. They just don’t translate well.

  14. They normally do a pretty good job with turning books into movies but the Wedding Date I didn’t like the movie. Something Borrowed was another one.

  30. My favorite is definitely Little Women with Winona Ryder! The movie was different from the book, but it was still a good movie with great costumes!

  32. I enjoyed reading V. C. Andrews’ “Flowers in the attic” book, not the movie.

  36. I think The Hunger Games movies have been pretty spot-on for the books. On the other hand, Percy Jackson should get an award for how terrible the adaptations are.

  38. I actually liked the movie The Notebook more than the book. Very rarely happens, but I felt that the story was more developed in the movie.

  43. My favorite book to movie has been Gone With the Wind. I grew up watching that movie with my mom and got to read the book in 5th or 6th grade. I then knew the struggle of books to movies, however, it was well done both ways. (Harry Potter has a similar feel for me).

  48. I did not care for the movie adaptation of The Mortal Instrument series by Cassandra Clare, I just hope that the TV series turns out better.

  52. The Hunger Games comes to mind–I saw the movie first, and then read the books. I thought the movie did a great job! Also, several of the Harry Potter movies, because the visuals in the movies were so spectacular!

  54. Favorite…..The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe I love that movie but I didn’t like the other two Narnia movies as much.

  57. I was not very happy about Insurgent. I think they changed a lot in the movie, and that annoyed me.

  68. I think that some of my favorite books to movies have been in the classical genre like Little Women, Pride & Prejudice, North & South……..The most recent one I liked was The Maze Runner.

  71. I think my favorite book-come-movie adaptation is Gone with the Wind or Pride and Prejudice. Both classics and incredibly well done adaptations.

  77. I don’t watch movie adaptions usually as I often think the book is better or I don’t want to ruin the image I have in my head by watching the movie. I did hear good things about The Martian movie. I also watched all the Harry Potter movies which are done well, but I always point out what’s different in the movies.

  86. Most favorite and most hated-Pride and Prejudice. I loved the BBC miniseries and hated the new movie.

  91. I’m a big fan of Interview with the Vampire, Lord of the Rings, and the Harry Potter books/movies! Its way to hard to pick one lol 😀

  94. My favorite is the Lord of the Rings, and I agree, it could have been broken down into more movies (or even been longer) and I still would have watched them all.

  98. One of my favorites would have to be Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. But I feel despite everything that was going on in the last two movies of that series, it lost steam for me. I just wasn’t particularly thrilled by the last movie. Well, maybe I just need to watch them again. 🙂

  99. I’m going to go with LOTR for both. I’m old enough to have gone with high hopes to the theater to see Ralph Bakshi’s version and it convinced me that these books simply could never be successfully adapted to the big screen. Peter Jackson proved me wrong. Thank goodness.

    (BTW, the movie version of The Martian was good, but the book was far better.)

  101. The Bell Jar is my favorite book, but I hated it made in to a movie! I loved Wuthering Heights though (the original, old B&W one!)

  107. I loved Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s stone! BUT I watched the movie before I started reading the books. It was what made me want to read the books! So I thought it was great and that the book was even better.

  109. The worst book to movie I’ve ever watched was the Percy Jackson and the Olympians movie. It was an okay movie but it was way off from the book, so was the second one. They made me cringe when I compared them.

  120. So far I would have to say that Twilight is one of the worst books to movies in my opinion. I just don’t think the movies did the books justice
