We’re ringing in the New Year with lots of giveaways! And by sharing some fun and wacky facts about ourselves. There’s a new giveaway at each stop so be sure to visit them all!

Hello, my name is Marlene and I’m a biblioholic. I love books, which is probably no surprise to anyone who reads this blog. Or possibly to anyone I’ve ever met!

As part of the hop, I’m supposed to share a few things about myself. Not the usual bloggy thing like what genres I like, but unusual and/or funny and/or strange but not too strange things about myself. None of us will have any secrets left by the time this week is over.

star-trek-postage-stamps-2016Fun Fact #1: As I’ve often mentioned, I’m a Star Trek fan. Because I’m a fan, I’ve seen every Star Trek movie, even the awful ones like Insurrection and Nemesis. But what I don’t usually say is that I saw all of the Star Trek movies set in the original universe on the first night. Even the ones I knew would be awful. However, I have no love for the reboot and have discontinued my streak. It just isn’t MY Star Trek anymore.

Fun Fact #2: I sometimes compare themes in books I read to fanfiction. What I don’t mention is that I wrote one piece of fanfiction, and published it at fanfiction.net. And to tie this into one of my other loves, it was fanfiction set in the videogame Final Fantasy X. The story is still up, but I haven’t updated it in a long, long time. And it isn’t under my real name, so good luck figuring out which one it is.

Fun Fact #3: I’m an only child. This isn’t as fun or as interesting as the other two things, but it is certainly having an effect on my life right now. My mother is elderly and because I have no siblings, it all falls on me. My husband is very helpful, but it isn’t the same for me as it is for him. There are also issues with his father, but he has a sister and brother to talk things over with. When I was a kid, I wanted a sibling, at least until I was 12 or so and took a good look at what it would be like to have a brother or sister 12 or more years younger than me, and changed my mind. Now that I’m an adult, I’m back to wishing I had a sibling again.

hobbit by tolkien paperback coverFun Fact #4: I read The Hobbit for the first time when I was in 3rd grade. So I was either 8 or 9. I re-read The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings over 25 times in the next 20 years, and still dip into it whenever I’m in the mood. I re-read LOTR so often that my mom thought a great punishment for me was to take my copies away until we’d resolved whatever she was mad about. I just borrowed a copy from the school library and kept it in my locker. Mischief managed!

Fun Fact #5: Driving over bridges, especially high ones, gives me the heebie-jeebies. I used to drive the Chicago Skyway Bridge on a regular basis, and it was a white-knuckle experience every single time.

  12. I hunted down The Hobbit for my brother when he got sick. He never got to read it. Years later I read it and found it to be one of the coolest books ever. I enjoyed it better than the movie (which I also enjoyed).

  17. I’m a hermit with a planner, which is kind of funny, because mostly I try to plan NOT to leave my house. (Hugs on the aging parents. Doing that here, but thankfully have siblings.)

  23. I am a big music addict. I listen to my itunes or radio or cds, all the time. I go to many, many live concerts every year too. There is nothing like listening to a live band.

  30. I love StarTrek but like you I haven’t seen the recent ones. When I was nine I had an accident and I had to stay in bed for six weeks so my teacher gave me “The Hobbit” to read. I don’t like cinema’s so I haven’t been to one since about 1996!

  34. I’m slightly OCD and check to make sure the stove is turned off before bed, even if I hadn’t used it that day!

  39. I have a serious book buying problem and own more books than I will ever be able to read. If I see a book on sale or free, I can’t seem to resist one-clicking it. Is there a 12 step program for someone like me?

  41. I like to drink Pepsi in a glass every morning for breakfast. I also have 6 children and 5 cats 🙂

  42. I love cats and feed my 3 and 10 strays 🙂 I have had all the strays desexed too.

  44. I’m an avid reader. I read over 200 books last year and have signed up to do the Goodreads Reading Challenge again this year.
    I also hoard scrapbook supplies. I buy more at least once a month for some project or other. I use them to make different things, not just scrapbooks. The last things I made with my scrapbook supplies were little notebooks and recipe card holders for my girlfriends for Christmas. Thanks for being part of the hop and for the chance to win.

  46. I do auto body repair for a living and build muscle cars in my spare time. I was pretty much raised in the garage with my dad, my mom couldn’t get me to come inside. I graduated and just kept working at the family shop. Guys get intimidated and I really wish they wouldn’t.

  50. I work with toddlers (and LOVE it) so talking about bodily fluids such as snot, spit up, and poop are daily occurrences.

  51. I’m old enough that I watched original airings of Star Trek. Not often, tho, because it was on opposite something (can’t remember what–Ironside, Hondo?) that my dad liked. But a few years later, a local channel aired daily episodes right after school so I got my fill that way. And I, too, gave up on the latest reboot.

    Good luck with the parents. I was my parents’ main caregiver for about 18 years and know how tough it can be. I have siblings, but used to exclaim, “I am NOT an only child!” 🙂

  60. Not sure I have anything strange or interesting about me. I’ve never been married, never been on a date, and I know why. I’m not good looking and I’m very overweight. I’m not being down on myself, I just am realistic and know how society reacts. Guess that’s why I love reading lol

  63. Strange fact – I have hyper-realistic dreams, even some illogical ones that I don’t know are real until I wake up. Due to this, I often don’t know if a memory was real or if I dreamt it, and also have deja vu.

  76. I love watching The Amazing Race. I watched all 26 series during the past year by subscribing to cbs.com I don’t know that I could ever do the race (I hate running!) but I love living vicariously. This is the same reason that I love to read!

    I’m in complete agreement with you. So many people I know tell me that I’m weird for not liking the rebooted series, but I just can’t find myself enjoying it. It just… bothers me for so many reasons.

    I don’t like bananas, but the thing is that so many nice looking recipes call for bananas. So I often find myself substituting weird fruits for it. “It’s not banana bread, it’s strawberry bread!”

  96. I also used to write fanfiction…not under my real name, either 😉 And for a pretty large fandom, lol.

  98. Something unusual, I insert a different name for main characters in books. I even change how they look too. So by the time I finish the book I forget what the real main character looks like and I sometimes forget their name too.

  99. I have only seen one star trek film (on tv), but I can’t remember which one and until last year I hadn’t been to the cinema in 9 years.

  105. I’m a big Star Trek fan, too, and even used to put on conventions with a local non-profit group of fans.

  106. I am crazy about my Yorkies. They are my kids. We buy them surprises when we go out. Yup totally hooked.

  127. I can’t do some wickedly cool and fun but simple things…like ride a bike and whistle. And it’s disappointing as all heck.

  133. I can’t stand for my food to touch so I spend roughly 10 minutes explaining this when I go out to eat to the server, my friends are now used to it ; )

  134. I love sweets and I love nuts separately, but I will not eat sweets that have nuts in them. My only exception to this rule is praline pecans LOL.

  135. I have 2 cats, and a grandcat that live with me. Or, truthfully, they allow me to live with them. 🙂
