Freedom to Read Giveaway Hop

Welcome to the Freedom to Read Giveaway Hop, hosted by BookHounds.

This hop celebrates U.S. Independence Day.

It’s important, this year and every year, to link the Freedom to Read with Independence Day. Why? Because the freedom to read is enshrined in the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. While the First Amendment is generally thought of as the one about freedom of speech and freedom of the press (along with several other important freedoms), those freedoms of speech and press require that people also be free to listen to those speeches without fear of government interference, and the freedom to read what those free presses have printed without fear of government censorship or punishment.

So without that Freedom to Read, the tree falls in the forest and there’s no one to hear it. In today’s world of internet bubbles and information silos, it is more important than ever to be free to say, and print and READ all points of view – especially the controversial and unpopular ones.

In celebration of our Freedom to Read, I am giving away the winner’s choice of a $10 Amazon Gift Card or a $10 Book from the Book Depository, so that you can celebrate your freedom to read by getting something awesome.

  8. The anti-war memoir Born on the Fourth of July is the only thing that pops into my head. The title is a play on the author’s birth date and altered approach to love of country rather than 4th of July celebration.

  15. No special stories really but I guess celebrating the 200th birthday in 1976 wads a memory I will always hold onto. The fireworks were some of the best, people dressed like the 1700’s , loads of food and events. It was a special 4th of July for sure.

  28. I’m Canadian by birth so I haven’t actually read any 4th of July stories that I can remember. I hope everyone in the U.S. has a safe and fun holiday. Thanks for the generous giveaway.

  29. I don’t have a book or story that I’ve read that features the 4th or Independence day.

  30. I was just talking to my son about this. We took our dog to the fireworks show one year and he was not impressed. He ran! My son chased but he was too quick. He ran right to our car and hid underneath. Pretty smart pup. No more adventures for him though.

  31. I haven’t read a Fourth of July inspired book but I do like to relax and read on the Fourth!

  32. Independence Day was a very good movie and I am sure I have watched it at least 10 times.

  38. Right now I have a nephew in Boot Camp that will be serving in the Air Force as soon as he graduates. I’m so proud of his willingness to serve our country and all the freedoms that we have. I’m grateful for the brave people that set out into the unknown to settle this great country and build the great nation that we now call America.

  39. I don’t have any favorites about the Fourth of July specifically. But I am currently reading a nonfiction book about our nation’s founding.

  40. “What’s your favorite story about the Fourth of July?” Does the movie “Independence Day” count?

  41. I live in the Philippines so the only fourth of July stories I know are the ones usually in YA contemporaries but even those are just minor parts of the book

  42. I have not read any stories about the 4th of July. But whenever I think of the 4th of July, I think of Sam the Eagle from the Muppets.

  43. I can’t think of a book about the fourth of July but maybe the movie Born on the Fourth of July came from a book.

  44. I can remember when I was growing up we would always have a party on July 4. EVERYONE came: family, friends, and anyone else. Every year we celebrated the 4th. It was only later when I was older I realized we were also celebrating my grandparents anniversary. We always had a great time.

  45. I don’t really have a favorite story “about” the fourth of July. I don’t know if there are any, really, lol 🙂

  46. I’ve never heard any stories about the 4th of July, but I love the purpose of the celebration, and I’ve always enjoy the way you guys celebrate!

  49. I just realized I don’t do much on the Fourth of July because I can’t think of a single special moment!

  50. When I was young, we would always go to the small town where my Aunt and Uncle lived. This town always had a parade, fireworks and a carnival with games, concessions and rides. One year I was riding on the tilt-a-whirl with a boy I liked when the heavy chain necklace he was wearing got caught in the back of the seat. He wasn’t hurt but very embarrassed when they had to stop the ride and extract him from the seat.

  51. I don’t have any favorite books about the 4th of July, but my favorite holiday movie is the musical 1776. Thanks for the great giveaway!
