I’m a bit puzzled as to why this stack ended up being almost entirely at the front of the alphabet. I did not plan it that way.
All of these books look fascinating! Of course they do or I wouldn’t have picked them. But seriously, there are a couple I really want to highlight. First, literally as it was published first, The Black Company by Glen Cook. It’s part of the awesome Tor Essentials line. The Black Company is just the kind of gritty fantasy I usually like, but I bounced hard off it when I tried it way back when. Cook was a friend of a friend so I wanted to read his work and couldn’t get into it at the time. Now that it’s back out we’ll see.
Second book I want to push at people is Down a Dark River. I want to shove that into the hands of anyone who likes historical mysteries because it is AWESOME. It’s also currently on sale for $1.99 on Kindle, so if you’re looking to take a flyer at a book this weekend it’s both marvelous and cheap and I highly recommend it!

I’m going to give it another try, sooner rather than later. It’s just the thing I like so I’m thinking that way back when I felt a bit obligated and that didn’t work so well. We’ll see.

I never got into Black Company either but have heard good things. Dr. Moreau is one I’m interested in as well.

I’m SO curious about Dr. Moreau. I’m also wondering if I loved The Strange Case of the Alchemist’s Daughter – which includes a different variation of Moreau’s daughter – so much that I won’t be able to really get behind a different version. We’ll see.

I would be really curious to see what you think! I remember the Alchemist’s Daughter as well as The Madman’s Daughter by Megan shepherd- I never got to either one but the whole concept of Moreau- related retellings interests me.
What I loved about Alchemist’s Daughter wasn’t just Catherine Moreau, it was the idea of every mad scientist’s daughter getting together and doing so much interesting stuff. Another book that played with Moreau’s daughter in a really surprising way was The Album of Dr. Moreau. It’s short and surprising and funny.

It just hit such a sweet spot for me. Good mystery, fascinating characters, interesting portrait of the time, historical details, women who were still center of the story but not anachronistic. And first in series so no catching up required. All the marks!
