April Showers Giveaway Hop

Welcome to the April Showers Giveaway Hop, hosted by  The Mommy Island & The Kids Did It!

Looking at that cute little gnome in the hop graphic, I’d say that April Showers bring mushrooms. Which, come to think of it, they actually do! I said last month that this little guy was a real charmer, and there he is, charming all and sundry! Especially with that wide-eyed expression on his little face. That mushroom must have popped up rather suddenly.

I’ve always loved the “April Showers” theme because April is my birth month and today is my birthday. Which was sometimes a bit of a problem growing up, as Passover is also around this time of year and encompassed my birthday more often than not. Or so it seemed.

That meant no cake and no party – or at least a delay until the whole thing seemed anticlimactic. This year Passover starts on April 15 – Tax Day. (No one is going to be looking forward to THAT!) Next year it starts on April 5. It bothered me a lot as a kid, but now, not so much. We live and learn.

Our birthday tradition at Chez Reading Reality, or any occasion that is normally accompanied by presents, is that we tell each other what we want and for birthdays the birthday person gets a meal in the restaurant of their choice. The last couple of years were just plain weird, not just that going out was iffy, but also it was hard to figure out what constituted “a present” when going out was so dicey.

This year I did figure out what I wanted – thanks to Arlene’s visit in January – and it did arrive over the weekend. Now Galen needs to let me know what he wants for HIS birthday before July!

What about you? What’s your family’s birthday tradition? Or what would you most like to get for your birthday this year? Answer in the rafflecopter for your chance at Reading Reality’s usual hop prize, the winner’s choice of a $10 Amazon Gift Card or $10 in Books.

  1. For my birthday this year I want to take a trip to Santa Fe with friends. Will be our first trip in 2 years.
    Thanks for the contest.

  2. I’d love to get a gift card this year for my birthday so I can buy books! Thanks for the awesome giveaway!

  3. The family birthday tradition is dessert for breakfast – some years it’s gingerbread, some years it’s cupcakes…good way to start the morning, and the birthday children spend weeks choosing what they want for the family!

  4. Happy Birthday, Marlene. Hope you’re spending it w/ Galen and the furballs and not at the courthouse!

(Furballs autocorrected to fireballs. I considered leaving it.)

  5. Happy Birthday! I hope you have an excellent day filled with love and cake. My birthday is really close to Christmas so the family tradition was always to ignore it. Just kidding, but it was always low-key because of the season, no biggie. I have everything I want and need already so no need for gifts this year. Maybe some tasty chocolate would be nice.

  6. We don’t really have any traditions .. and as of right now I am not sure what I want.

  7. For my birthday we always go to my favorite restaurant by the lake for surf & turf.

  8. Our birthday traditions are laid-back. No fuss. Except for the grandchildren. They get a party (family) and decorations and cake. All the cousins get together, and it’s a great time. Most of their birthdays are in the summer, so it’s lots of fun.

  9. every year when i was little i got a birthday cake with my favorite character drawn on it. 🙂

  10. We just always have a family dinner together to celerate birthdays…and of course…cake!

  11. The birthday person gets to pick where we go out for dinner. At least that’s how it was before Covid.

  12. My parents would always get us wonderful presents as kids but there was also always a small present pile for the other kids so everyone would be happy! I have carried this tradition on with my own children.

  13. I’m hoping to get a few books or puzzles off my Amazon wish list this year. I’d also really love for my hubby to finish hanging our shutters on our house. lol

  14. Growing up we didn’t do anything special for our birthdays but as we got older my sisters take me out for my birthday.

  15. We don’t have any traditions and I don’t get any birthday gifts so there really isn’t anything I am hoping for.

  16. Our family’s birthday tradition is to pull the person’s ear lobe 1 time for each year of their life to bring them good luck the following year.

  17. I already got mine this year early. My youngest and her hubby gave me 2 floor to ceiling black bookcases and put them together and put books on it. Love them!

  18. One person may bring the flowers and cake. The next person may bring flowers. Others may or may not bring a gift, or gift cards. most bring a Birthday card. There is no real party, people visit when they have the time. It’s a nice time, family photos are taken and gossip is told. This year I had people visit me over a long weekend, three days. No drinking. Cake and coffee or soda. 🙂

  19. I would love to get warm boots for my birthday this year! My current boots are stained and worn out.

  20. My partner & I share a birthday month so we like to share a celebration like a camping trip or a concert.

  21. We don’t have a specific tradition in my family for birthday celebrations, the younger kids usually get a party but the adults just sort of do their own thing. My birthday was March 6 and I didn’t get anything but I would have liked books or chocolate truffles

  22. Aside from cake and ice cream, there is no specific birthday tradition–whatever is done is determined by the age of the birthday person!

  23. We always have a cake and balloons on our birthdays along with a dinner of choice for the birthday individual!

  24. We always go out to eat as a herd for their birthday to a place of their choice.

  25. Our birthday tradition is to go out to dinner to celebrate and the have cake at home afterwards.

  26. Gift cards are always really good and nice and I like to get out and walk the trails because it’s in the spring time now.

  27. My birthday is in May and I like to receive plants for my garden and outside pots.

  28. A timely question, since my birthday is coming up in a few days. As I am still under Covid lockdown, it will be a quiet celebration. I would most like books (as always) and gift certificates to fabric shops, to help me choose quilting fabric to keep me busy here at home during the year.

  29. We take the birthday person out to eat – they get to choose.
And we get them a DQ ice cream cake!

  30. My birthday is this month too 🙂 , and it’s pretty much the same as what you said, plus picking a cake (usually buttercream 😀 ). I can relate to your passover story, as my birthday can fall on Easter (when many grocery stores and some restaurants will be closed).

Which reminds me- hope you have a safe and happy Easter weekend 🙂 .

  31. My birthday is at the end of this month and I would love a visit from my son who lives far away.
