The Sunday Post AKA What’s on my (Mostly Virtual) Nightstand 10-5-25

I have several things to talk about today, which makes it a perfect day to post this picture of Luna, who clearly had a LOT to say on this particular afternoon.

Today is the first day of Banned Books Week 2025. Celebrate your freedom to read by reading a banned or challenged book to see what the challenge really is all about. Learn what is actually IN the book in question to see for yourself why is made so many people so very uncomfortable – which is what banning is REALLY all about. I could say more, but anything I might come up with has been said better elsewhere, to take just one example, Stephen King’s essay from 1992 titled “The Book-Banners: Adventure in Censorship is Stranger Than Fiction”.

In other news, and as a perfect example of just how fast the days are going to go by between now and the end of the year, Caffeinated Reviewer has announced the dates for the “Lucky” 13th Annual Ho-Ho-Ho Readathon. Reading Reality will again be one of the Elves posting challenges for the event so I’ve started pondering what the entries will be for this year’s Holiday Book Bingo.

If you are already looking forward to getting in on all the fun, the sign-up form and all the details are at Caffeinated Reviewer. It feels like it’s just a bit too early to start saying “Happy Holidays” but we’re ALMOST there!

  1. Im adding some ‘banned’ books to my TBR list – I am familiar with a few of them, and I am pretty sure I have seen A LOT worse out there. Its mind boggling to me that some of the smut that is out there is considered ‘okay’ but The Perks of Being a Wallflower is considered too risky!

    1. Once upon a time, part of my actual job was to answer the requests to ban, remove or recategorize books at a public library. The reasons people wanted stuff moved or removed, at least at that time, ran a surprisingly big range but it was never about the actual details and it wasn’t always about sex. It was always that something in the book – or video or whatever – made someone uncomfortable. The things that make people uncomfortable is surprisingly broad. It was certainly an interesting facet to the job!
