High above San Francisco, ten armed thieves take an office party hostage…but what they don’t count on is Vander Norcross.
Detective Brynn Norcross has three weeks until the birth of her first child and pregnancy has become a daily challenge. She’s excited but anxious, worried everything will change: for her, for her work, and her relationship with her hot, dangerous husband.
Attending the party of a wealthy potential client of Norcross Security is their last chance to let loose before the baby arrives. But when masked thieves storm the skyscraper and take everyone hostage, their night doesn’t quite go according to plan.
The last thing Vander Norcross wants to do is don a monkey suit and schmooze, but he’ll do anything to make his wife happy. When thieves raid the party, he manages to slip away in the chaos.
The intruders are trying to steal a hundred million dollars, innocent lives are at stake, and his pregnant wife is now a hostage. Vander is alone, unarmed, and outnumbered.
But these thieves have made a massive mistake. Vander is a man with specific skills, who never backs down, and who will do anything to rescue his wife.
My Review:
Did you love the Die Hard movies? Is there anyone who doesn’t love the Die Hard movies? Seriously. Die Hard is the modern holiday classic that no one ever expected – but can’t resist.
The Norcross Rescue is Die Hard with a much happier ending, which should be more than enough of a hint to tease readers, especially readers (like moi) who have followed the author’s Norcross Security series from its beginning in The Investigator.
Most of the author’s series let readers return to the characters and the world with some lovely ending novellas, because we get involved with the characters and want to see how all of our friends are doing AFTER their happily ever afters.
Norcross Security has been a bit different because the author – and the readers, – are having so much fun seeing closed-off, grumpy Vander Norcross, CEO of Norcross Security and the very embodiment of The Powerbroker, let his own world turn upside down ever since he reluctantly opened his heart to San Francisco Police Detective Brynn Sullivan.
She had to chase him until he got it through his thick head and closed off heart that he wanted to catch her. And keep her. Without putting her in a protective cage. Something he’s STILL have a bit of a problem processing.
The number of scenarios that test that resolve, and that give them the opportunity to rescue each other, has led to a series of mini-stories that have been keeping readers on the edge of their seats, Mr. & Mrs. Norcross, Saving Mr. Norcross, and now, The Norcross Rescue.
The stakes are higher in this latest story than they’ve ever been, as Brynn (Sullivan) Norcross and all of the other attendees at a swanky party are about to have their holiday party plans seriously interrupted. Not that Vander knows that, yet. He’d just rather not have attended in the first place. But it’s a new client who wants to hire the firm, the CEO is surprisingly good people, and Brynn knows this is probably her last party for a while as she’s very pregnant and only three weeks from her due date.
In the best Die Hard fashion, the entire party is taken hostage by a band of self-proclaimed Robin Hoods who really just want to steal $100,000 and give it to themselves. Through wire transfers that have more security than they can ever crack.
Instead, the would-be thieves are cracking apart, while Vander takes them out one by one.
As the clock ticks down to either disaster or a fresh new year.
Escape Rating B: This was just plain fun. And not just because all the “good guys” milked the Die Hard references for all they were worth. And they were worthy of a lot of wry grins and rueful chuckles even in this deadly situation.
This is certainly a story for the fans. If you don’t already know these people, there’s not quite enough to get as involved in the story as one might. It’s still good, but it loses something without the background. So if you don’t already love the Norcross Security team, start with The Investigator. If you’re already in the series up to your heartstrings, it’s a terrific story to let readers be with them at the start of this new phase in their lives.
I’m glad I read this one. These follow-up novellas are a terrific way to see how everyone is doing, and the references to Die Hard just made this particular story just that much more fun!
