I am, always, thankful for books. There’s a quote from Anne Herbert that’s not nearly famous enough that goes:

Most of us can’t afford to buy all the books we want to read. Certainly as a child and young adult I couldn’t even begin to buy all the books I wanted to read. That’s what libraries are FOR, and that’s why so many people’s fond memories of them involve stacks of books and many pleasurable hours reading them.

The corollary to the quote is that the books you get through the library, while they may not exactly get you through times of no money at all they do get you through times that are missing something, or a whole lot of somethings, that you need or want or miss dreadfully. Or at least that’s always been true for me – and it has certainly been true these last few years of pandemics and upheavals and everything else that has upset chunks of the world and everyone in it.

So I’m very thankful for books to get me through. I’m also very thankful for the friends that have been part of the journey, and to all of you who have followed and commented and participated on Reading Reality over these past OMG 11 years (AND COUNTING!)

I hope you’re all ready for tomorrow’s Turkey Day! We’re doing something a bit different and having friends over on Black Friday instead of on Thanksgiving. It solves their problem of trying to be two places at once – which no one has really figured out a solution for yet – and doing our cooking on a day when we CAN go to the grocery store if we forgot something important.

So on the actual Turkey Day we’re having actual turkey – really just a turkey boob for two. On Friday we’re getting a Honey Baked Ham – something that would be a bear to pick up on Wednesday but should be easy-peasy on Friday. We’re also making potato pancakes and a broccoli casserole because OMG that meal will need something green in it. It’s all kind of an experiment as we’re cooking things we’ve never made before and hoping it all works out. No matter what, the ham is guaranteed to be good. And the pie. Did I mention the pie? We’re picking up a Chocolate Chess Pie, which I don’t think either of us has ever had, from a place that specializes in pies.

That’ll definitely be just fine!

Black Friday Giveaway Hop

Welcome to the Black Friday Book Bonanza Giveaway Hop, hosted by yours truly, Reading Reality, and the Caffeinated Reviewer!

Today is Black Friday, so named because in times past, the day after Thanksgiving marked the day that retail stores finances tipped from red ink (receipts not matching expenses) to black ink. It’s also the unofficial start of the Holiday season – and the equally unofficial start of the Xmas shopping season – hence that red ink to black switch. Even though stores don’t exactly use paper ledgers and ink to do their accounting, the principle is still true. Today is the day when retail starts to turn a profit.

That this year Thanksgiving is relatively late in the calendar has more than a few of them hoping that there’s enough time to get enough people in their stores – whether physically or virtually – to make the magic happen again this year. (Next year it’s a tinge earlier. C’est la vie)

This is not a day when a lot of blogging happens. People are either out shopping or still recovering from yesterday’s turkey coma. Still, I’m going to do my little bit to help you with your holiday shopping, even if it’s just a present for yourself.

On the one hand, Black Friday isn’t quite what it used to be. It used to be THE semi-official start to the holiday shopping season – not that some frighteningly organized people didn’t get their shopping done well ahead of the season. With online shopping so convenient ALL THE TIME, one can hope that the madding crowds are a bit reduced. Certainly there are options that allow anyone so inclined (like moi) to avoid the proverbial Christmas rush altogether.

On that other hand, Black Friday got it’s name because that was the day when most retail stores began making a profit for the year, flipping their ledgers from red ink to black. I wonder if that part of the name still holds true?

One year we were in Vancouver, BC for Thanksgiving and the weekend after. It was very, very strange to see all the Black Friday sale signs in a place that did not have a Thanksgiving Thursday, as Canadians sensibly have their Thanksgiving holiday in October!

As everyone knows, Black Friday is the Friday after Thanksgiving in the U.S. It’s the day when all the stores run all the crazy doorbuster sales, starting at absolutely obscene hours of the morning. Or the night before.

Black Friday got its name because the opening of the holiday season was usually the first day of the year that retail outlets began operating at a profit, in other words, in the black, and out of the red that means debt and loss and other bad things.

But with Cyber Monday now happening all holiday season (and all year round!) things are not what they used to be in the world of retail and in-person shopping. Which won’t make today any less frenetic if you go to the sales.

This is my very first time hosting a Giveaway Hop, and I can’t thank Kimba at the Caffeinated Book Reviewer nearly enough for all of her help and guidance. Without her, this hop wouldn’t have managed to get off the ground. Thank you so much, Kimba!

But about Black Friday. This may be one of the perfect days to participate in a giveaway hop. While there are some poor unfortunate souls who have to work today, for the rest of us, it’s a day for friends and family and recovering from yesterday’s turkey coma.

The holiday season may be a wonderful time of the year, as so many of the songs say, but it is a lousy time to go shopping, or be anywhere near a mall. Parking is horrendous. It is much more fun to shop online – there’s no waiting and no crowds. Personally, I don’t think it’s just Cyber Monday any more, I think it’s Cyber Weekend, and I’m just fine with that.

Freddie-cat likes it better too. He’s still a growing boy, and needs his humans around to provide both first and second breakfast, along with lunch and dinner. And occasionally second dinner if he makes enough of a nuisance of himself.

The Sunday Post AKA What’s on my (Mostly Virtual) Nightstand 11-13-16

One of the bloggy things that I have always enjoyed is the Black Friday Giveaway Hop. Black Friday, that strange day between Thanksgiving Day and the first holiday shopping weekend of the season, is kind of a weird day for blogging. Many people are off work and out of town with family. Some people still have to work. As a librarian, I’ve often had to work that day. For public libraries, it can be one of the busiest days of the year. High school students are wrapping up assignments before the end of the semester, and college students are home from school, often doing the same thing. It tends to be an “all hands on deck” kind of day.

BFBB2016Button300x400OptimizedBut it doesn’t feel like many people are reading book blogs. Enter the Black Friday Book Bonanza Giveaway Hop, which always seemed like the perfect thing to post. Everyone is excited about getting another present, or a gift card to buy more presents, on Black Friday. I’m hosting the Black Friday Book Bonanza this year, with Kimberly at Caffeinated Book Reviewer as my co-host. Kimberly was one of the hosts the last two years, and I appreciate her help with getting my first blog hop off the ground.

In other news, I started a new job this week. I’m the solo librarian at TAPPI, the Technical Association for the Pulp and Paper Industry. I had been working there on contract, setting up the library. Now I get to help make the library a success. Wish me luck!
