Lucifer left a void in my heart in more than one way. Although Hecate, with her mostly black tortitude, makes an excellent stand in for Halloween pictures.

Once upon a time, this was the Month of Books Giveaway Hop, now it’s the Seasons of Books Giveaway Hop, with the hops starting on the days the seasons change. Today, September 22, is the first official day of FALL for the 2025 season, meaning that the hop starts TODAY! YAY!

Fall certainly does feel FELL here in the ATL. The weather has been glorious – warm enough not to need a jacket but cool enough for a nice breeze. Also cool enough that we don’t have a near-monsoon every afternoon while the humidity wrings itself out. A little rain is probably needed again, but those torrential downpours are something else!

I really do wonder if my reading tastes just don’t match anyone else’s. This is yet another season where not a one of the books featured in the hop graphic are on my personal TBR pile for the season – not that I’m not always looking forward to more than a few books EVERY season. Fall has certainly FELL around here – and it’s lovely. Admittedly, fall in Atlanta just means that the temps have dropped to the low 80s during the day and the mid 60s at night, but it does mean that the air is marvelously crisp in the evening and there’s always a lovely breeze. We could probably use some rain, but that doesn’t mean I’m looking forward to that part.

My feet are cold at night – my feet are ALWAYS cold – so I’m looking forward to flannel sheet season with great anticipation. OTOH, I could live without the switch from Daylight Saving Time back to Standard Time – even though it brings an extra hour of sleep. Still, that’s only for one night, while the early darkness lasts for FOUR WHOLE MONTHS. 🙁

Today is actually the first day of school – or at least it is here in Gwinnett County, Georgia. Which just seems ridiculously early. Also weird that school is starting on a Friday.

Then again, I went to school in the dark ages before the schools in Cincinnati were air conditioned, so we started just after Labor Day and that still seems right even if it’s now wrong.

This hop happens every year, and I’ve never been able to decide whether that daily apple is meant to be “an apple for the teacher” or “an apple a day keeps the doctor away”. Whichever it might be it’s still very much SUMMER around here but school starts today regardless!

There are some marvelous ice cold drinks that are just made for quenching the thirst brought on by a hot summer day. For some, it’s tart, sweet, citrus-y lemonade. For others it’s the sharp bite of iced tea, whether sweet or unsweet. And there are more iconic summer images of condensation sliding down a bottle of beer as its being tipped up and swallowed down than everyone could ‘shake a stick at’ – even simultaneously.

Even a glass of plain, ordinary water tastes extra special on a hot summer day – and it’s even good for you, too!

This hop is always right before the Fourth of July, and that’s always an interesting time at Chez Reading Reality even if it isn’t always sparkly. This year, as in previous years, this hop is happening at around the same time as the American Library Association Annual Conference. Two years ago, we came home from conference with the plague. Last year at this time, we didn’t yet know whether we’d contracted “con crud” or not. (We didn’t). This year we won’t know whether or not we’re incubating something for a couple more days.

But we are looking forward to the July 4th holiday on Friday even if the cats are NOT. Or wouldn’t be if they knew. This particular cat clowder is not fond of fireworks, although Hecate’s give-a-damn seems to be utterly busted on most subjects and this one is no exception.

While no one in this house is particularly looking forward to the random booms every night this weekend, we certainly are looking forward to the holiday – even if that means more time reading while staying inside where it’s air conditioned.

These last few weeks of Spring in the ATL have been WET. Gloomy and WET. It’s been looking like we moved back to Seattle where they call this weather “liquid sunshine”. The nearly daily thunderboomers have thrilled the cats NOT AT ALL. Except for Hecate, whose ‘give a damn’ is completely busted. As long as the rain and the lightning are on the other side of the glass she doesn’t care. At all.

But her humans are feeling a bit waterlogged.
