Apple a Day Giveaway Hop

Welcome to the 2023 edition of the Apple A Day Giveaway Hop, hosted by Mama the Fox!

While the phrase “an apple a day” used to be, at least, an invocation to eat one’s fruits and vegetables to keep from getting sick, as the original phrase was “an apple a day keeps the doctor away”, the apple in this hop’s image is more likely “an apple for the teacher” as this is the week that kids return to school in a lot of districts – including the districts in my vicinity.

So the parents I know are feeling caught between looking forward to everyone going back to their regular routine and also kind of dreading going back to their routine all at the same time. While at the same time still being slightly weirded out as August 1 seems like it’s much too early to be sending kids back to school. It’s still SUMMER! Especially in this heat.

But it’s not. It’s Back to School time!

Apple A Day Giveaway Hop

Welcome to the Apple a Giveaway Hop, hosted by Mama the Fox!

The last time I participated in this hop, back in 2020, I wondered whether the “apple a day” in the hop’s name referred to the old saying about “an apple a day keeps the doctor away” or if it was all about giving an apple to the teacher. Although teachers should be much better paid than just in apples, this year I’m pretty sure that it’s about that apple for the teacher, because the local schools are starting up this week.

Which still feels WAY too early. But then, I went to school in the Dark Ages. The buildings were old – my mother attended the same high school I did in mostly the same buildings – and they were, for the most part, NOT air conditioned. Summers in Cincinnati are fairly beastly, so students would have been dropping like flies if we’d been stuck inside those buildings in August. Now I’m sure they are all properly A/C’d, but I’m really happy that I don’t have to see the power bills for my old high school in the summer. It must be an expensive monster to cool – and yes, that old building is still in use.

No matter whether you are giving them to someone or keeping them all to yourself, apples are a marvelously tasty treat, whether you’re putting them in a pie or a cobbler, or just crunching down. (They’re great slathered with peanut butter!). But what’s your favorite kind of apple? When they’re available, I love Honeycrisps and Jonagolds. What about you?

Answer in the comments for your chance at one of Reading Reality’s usual prizes, the winner’s choice of a $10 Amazon Gift Card or $10 in books.

An Apple a Day Giveaway Hop

Welcome to An Apple a Giveaway Hop, hosted by Mama the Fox!

I’m still trying to decide whether this hop refers to the old saying about “an apple a day keeps the doctor away” or if it’s “an apple for the teacher”. Not that combining those two things doesn’t work all too well right now. If both the teacher and the student have an apple a day, along with taking a whole bunch of other precautions, perhaps they have a chance of keeping COVID19 away.

That works, doesn’t it? The mixed metaphor I mean. Solving the problem of the virus is not nearly that simple.

While you – or the teacher – are eating that apple, there’s plenty of time to get started with a good book – or if you’re having a rainy week like we are, possibly two or three good books.

That’s why I’m giving away the winner’s choice of a $10 Amazon Gift Card – whether or not they buy apples with it – or the equivalent amount of book(s) from the Book Depository to read while eating those apples. This giveaway is open everywhere that the Book Depository ships – which is a LOT of places!
