Today is also Presidents Day. Or as an old friend used to quip, Birthington’s Washday. Make of that what you will.

It’s a small wish around here – or not so small considering the size of both George and Tuna – but we got a new gaming chair this weekend and we’re wishing that one or more of the cats would pose on either the new chair or the old chair now that we’ve set it up in a prime corner of the living room. But cats are a bit perverse, they NEVER do what their humans want them to, so I expect we’ll be waiting awhile and when it happens neither of us will have a camera-equivalent device within reach!

Winter started yesterday here in the ATL and it looks like it will be over in the middle of next week. I’m joking, but not by all that much. The winters here seem to get warmer and shorter every year. Very much on the other hand, the summers are longer and hotter than Hades.

Still, climate is what you expect and weather is what you get. But it doesn’t feel like we’re getting quite the climate we used to – at least not around here.

Part of the attraction of moving to Atlanta was that we got all four seasons, but winter wasn’t all that much. And that’s the way we’d prefer it. What about you? How much winter is too much? How much is not enough? What’s just right for you?

Last night we said a hearty, “Goodbye” to 2025, quite possibly along with a wish for the door not to hit its ass on the way out. So long, 2025, it has not been good to know you. From a personal standpoint, this past year has been a good one – even though that has often felt precarious in one way or another. We’re all healthy, we’re happy together, Hecate, George, Luna and Tuna are all doing fine, but the world as a whole has been a hot mess – and not in a fun, fictional way.

Speaking of fun, fictional ways to look forward, my 2026 Most Anticipated Books list will be posted tomorrow. Because the way the year starts at Chez Reading Reality is a look forward to the year ahead. Also a lot of video gaming on the holiday. (We’re playing Diablo IV and it’s working for us as both a game and a metaphor. I love a good two-fer!)

On this first day of the new year, it’s so tempting to set a New Year’s resolution or two. Tempting but no, at least not for me. Telling myself I “should” do something is generally a guarantee that I won’t get it done – or at least not done promptly. What about you? Do you make New Year’s resolutions? Do you just resolve to keep doing the good things you’re already doing? Or do you just wait until the end of the year, backdate the good stuff you’ve done and call them your resolutions for the year?

Winter 2025-2026 Seasons of Books Giveaway Hop

Welcome to the Winter 2025-2026 Seasons of Books Giveaway Hop, hosted by It Starts At Midnight and Versatileer!

Once upon a time, this was the Month of Books Giveaway Hop, now it’s the Seasons of Books Giveaway Hop, with the hops starting on the days the seasons change. Yesterday, December 21, was the first official day of WINTER for the 2025-2026 season, meaning that the hop started YESTERDAY everywhere else but, thanks to the graciousness of the hop’s organizers, starts TODAY here at Reading Reality.

Winter in the ATL is a bit, well, wintry, but ONLY a bit. I lived in the Midwest for what is now the first two-thirds of my life, so I’m programmed to expect that the winter holidays occur in real wintry weather, with short days, long dark nights (we get those here too) but also cold temperatures, cold weather and “freezy-skid-stuff” on the ground and especially the roads and the sidewalks. Meaning that the weather here never triggers my sense that the holidays are coming because its just too warm for THAT even though the leaves do turn pretty colors and fall to the ground. Where they make a mess and we track them into the house for the cats to play with.

C’est la vie.

I’m also still wondering if my reading tastes really don’t match anyone else’s. This is yet another season where not a one of the books featured in the hop graphic are on my personal TBR pile for the season – not that I’m not always looking forward to more than a few books EVERY season. Dashing December Giveaway Hop

December is certainly dashing right on through this year, isn’t it?

Today marks the last and final day of this year’s Ho-Ho-Ho Readathon, so participants have just the rest of today – until midnight ET, to see if they can get in one last entry on the Holiday Bingo Board or any of the other participating events.

Tonight will be the third night of Hanukkah this year, there’s only eight days until Christmas Eve, nine days to Christmas Day, 10 days until the start of Kwanzaa which ends on Thursday, January 1, 2026 – the very first day of the coming year. Time surely does fly when during the holiday season.

Holly Jolly Giveaway Hop

I happens every year at this exact time. By that, I mean the day BEFORE this Holly Jolly Giveaway Hop begins, when I do the post prep. I start hearing Burl Ives in my head – and it’s a terrible thing.

There’s a very old holiday classic, “Have a Holly Jolly Christmas”, sung by, you’ve guessed it by now, the late Burl Ives. I don’t think of this song AT ALL the rest of the year, but the minute I see this hop theme and have to write a bit about it, I can’t get the song out of my head. For days and Days and DAYS.

Earworms only last half as long once they’re shared. So I’m sorry not sorry to pass it along to everyone else. If you don’t recognize the name or the song, just wait. It’ll get played, multiple times, over the holidays – if not by Ives, in one of the many, many cover versions.

2025 Ho-Ho-Ho Readathon Holiday Book Bingo Challenge

Silly Pumpkins Giveaway Hop

The pumpkin in the hop image doesn’t exactly live up to the theme, now does it? Which makes me feel duty-bound to provide at least ONE silly pumpkin image to make up for the poor thing’s…deficiencies.

Of course this is the image that grabbed my attention. Because cats. Not that our cats can’t be silly, and not that some of them are not, well, rather round like a pumpkin, but George is the only one that’s pumpkin-color, and he’s the most serious cat of them all! This pumpkin cat and its accompanying – and slightly worried looking – pumpkin mouse will just have to do!

Speaking of doing, what flavor do you think best gives you the sense that fall is in the air – as well as on the grocery shelves? For me, it’s apple cider. I don’t mind pumpkin pie, but it’s not the one I’ll pick if there are other options. Pumpkin spice in general isn’t bad, but the hype about it is overdone, IMHO.
