Spooktacular Giveaway Hop

Halloween is creeping closer and closer. That means it’s time for the Spooktacular Giveaway Hop, hosted by Bookhounds!

It also means that pumpkin spice is taking over the world. hopefully only on a temporary basis.

Is it my imagination, or did the pumpkin spice parade start rolling out even earlier this year than it did last year?

But seriously, or at least semi-seriously, it’s that time again when the air starts to get just a bit crisp, for relative definitions of crisp depending on where you live, the leaves start to fall, if they haven’t already, and everyone buys large packages of small bars of candy and pretends that all the candy is for the veritable hordes of trick-or-treaters expected to bombard your doorstep on Halloween.

I try to only buy candy I can’t eat – it saves loads of regret the next day (week, month, year). On that other hand, my husband really likes Snickers. To each their own.

As usual, I tried to pick a book with some vague relationship to scary stuff to review for Halloween. I don’t read much horror, so this is always a stretch. The planned book is Black Box Inc by Jake Bible. It’s urban fantasy, which is usually as close to horror as I get, in a post-extradimensional happening world. It looks like it has definite possibilities on the slightly creepy scale, just perfect for Halloween.

I don’t read horror (or watch it) because it scares me. If I want to be scared, all I have to do is watch the news. But what really creeps you out?

  1. I love pumpkin everything. It’s my favorite thing about this time of year, since the weather does not seem to want to cooperate lately. It means eggnog everything is on the horizon. I have major needle phobias. I can’t get one without passing out, and I even get sick/pass out if someone else (IRL or on TV/Movie) is getting one.

  2. Like you said, the news: not just the terrible things people can do, but also how the supposedly neutral News manipulate everything we see and hear. It’s right out of the novel 1984. Yikes

  3. It’s crazy but I have a phobia about seeing mice.. I totally lock in place as my heart races and I screech. Don’t know why but thank God I don’t ever see them. And I’m with you on not reading horror stories.

  4. Clowns totally freak me out. Also I’m not fond of Scarecrows or porcelain dolls with the fixed staring eyes.

  5. What really freaks me out is big, hairy spiders! I can handle the smaller or even medium ones but the big one with hair has me running screaming.

  6. IRL, spiders freak me out.

I’m also a big weenie about scary books/movies, but will try moderately spooky ones.

  7. I really don’t care for things with more than 8 legs (spiders and me, we’re copacetic, though), but I have nightmares about becoming invisible, inaudible, and forgotten.

  8. I’d have to agree with you. I don’t watch horror or read horror, creeps me out. My husband tried to get me to watch the first season of American Horror Story and it gave me nightmares so I quit..lol. Now watching the news…that’s really scary because it’s really happening. I try to remind myself that there is still more good people out there than the bad. You just see more about the bad on the news and not about the people out there doing all the good. Thank you so much for the giveaway…we love them!

  9. I get really creeped out when I’m home alone and hear doors closing..has happened a few times, and this is not an old house..especially because I keep all the bedroom doors closed anyway..extra creepy!

  10. Idiots creep me out. It seems you can’t go out without running into them. Also my imagination….LOL

  11. Being startled scares me. Doesn’t matter if it is spiders, snakes, clowns, etc… if I don’t see it coming I freak.

  12. I’ve always been creeped out by the thought of vampires…just the thought of something coming into my room at night to bite my neck and remove some blood…CREEPY!

Thanks for the chance to win 🙂

  13. Snakes insanely creep me out. I am not falling for that whole “they are more scared of you” bit. 😛

  14. I have a phobia of cockroaches, I can’t even be around them even when they’re dead and I panic even if they’re in another room!

  15. Politics scare me. One person thinks that his/her opinion is better than another person. In the end, there are always disagreements and/or fights.

  16. Under cooked chicken scares me to pieces- I was seriously ill because of eating this once, couldn’t hold down food for three days.

  17. I’m afraid of dentists, worms, and Freddy Krueger. Thanks.

  18. I am scared and creeped out by very high, open spaces with an edge. Like a bridge. No thanks!

  19. Clowns and whales! I’m terrified of the oven because of whales, it’s quite an irrational fear!

  20. Lots of things scare me or creep me out like snakes, spiders, slugs, and dark foggy nights.

  21. I have claustrophobia so the thought of being locked in a small space creeps me out.

  22. I’m not afraid of needles with shots but i remember being most scared during the one Saw movie when the woman thrown into the pit with needles

  23. What really scares me is the news – the horrible stories of the evil in the world. I don’t like to watch scary movies. Thank you for the chance!

  24. I’m “creeped out” and “scared” by man’s ability to be so cruel to other people….unborn babies (murdering millions a year and thinking it is okay), terrorists, serial killers, etc…. God, I beg Your Mercy on us!
    Thanks and God Bless!

  25. Mice creep me out. I had one dash across my feet as I was sleeping in a mountain cabin once.

  26. The things that scare me most are books/movies that involve bad things happening to kids. I can’t finish those.
    Happy Halloween!
