The Sunday Post AKA What’s on my (Mostly Virtual) Nightstand 1-22-23

OMG it was a DAMN good reading week. (Or considering Tuesday’s book, perhaps that should be a “glassdamn” good reading week). Even though I did have a couple of these prepped in advance in order to handle being tied up in a four-day Zoom marathon and being totally “dain bramaged” at the end of each day.

My committee has completed its business, the awards presentation has been recorded, and all will be revealed one week from today. Then the new committee year begins and I’ll have a new assignment and a bit of a different set of books to contend with for the upcoming year – along with my usuals, of course.

I’m looking forward to the new challenge.

But speaking of challenges new and old, here’s today’s cat picture, which I’ve titled, “The Teetering Tower of Tuna and Le Chat Noir” because Lucifer’s a bit too slender form on the right looks just like the pose of the black cat in the famous historical poster “Le Chat Noir” and Tuna’s position on the left is entirely too self-evident. The high platform on the cat tree is just not up to dealing with either his size or his tendency to “galumph” into position!

The Sunday Post AKA What’s on my (Mostly Virtual) Nightstand 12-25-22

Whether or not you believe that this is “the most wonderful time of the year”, today is Christmas. If this is your holiday, then Merry Christmas. If all you’re celebrating is a day off, like this household, then that can be plenty to celebrate. If you’re celebrating that you have heat and power and in your house after this week’s weather, that’s something pretty big to celebrate!

A tree fell on our house in the middle of the night on Xmas Eve Eve, so we’re definitely celebrating that last bit. The tree hit the back stairs and managed to do nothing more than barely scrape the side of the house and deck. But that sudden impact made for quite the shock at 3 something in the dark of the a.m.

It didn’t wake either the cats or myself, although Galen was up and about trying to see what the damage was in the middle of a rather interrupted night.

Something to celebrate on a very cold and wintry holiday.

p.s. The boys say Happy Holidays!

The Sunday Post AKA What’s on my (Mostly Virtual) Nightstand 12-4-22

It’s a kind of misty, moisty weekend here in the ATL. Here’s a picture of part of the clowder watching the world drip by.

That’s Lucifer on the left and George and Luna on the right. This particular configuration gets along well. George and Luna are buddies and nobody messes with Lucifer. He’s the smallest of the five cats, but he has a tremendous amount of presence. And he was here first so the rest of them defer to his demonic majesty.

Between  The Twist of a Knife and A World of Curiosities this week, I ended up with some mystery television to watch. Magpie Murders was terrific. I won’t say it was better than the book, but it certainly made terrific use of its new medium. Three Pines, on the other hand, was not bad, and certainly better than an earlier attempt, but I have some reservations. They did a good job casting Gamache, but so much of what makes him so fascinating in the books is going on beneath the surface, which is not something that TV does well at all. But I’m curious enough to see how the series turns out.

The Sunday Post AKA What’s on my (Mostly Virtual) Nightstand 10-9-22

Have you ever seen the full Purrrrina Cat Chonk Chart? I specifically mean the full one because often only the bigger half of the chart gets displayed. Lucifer has never hit even the middle of that chart.

But at least, based on his most recent vet visit, he’s finally moved up from “Chonk Zero” to “Lean and Mean” – not that he’s ever mean in spite of the look on his face at the vet’s this weekend.

But this picture does make it a bit clearer why the boy is named for a demon. Someone is not best pleased in this picture. The good news at the vet was that he’s stopped disappearing. This time last year he only weighed 8 pounds but his bone structure would happily support a much bigger cat. The less good news was that Mr. Senior Cat there has some arthritis in his back hips and legs. Poor baby! I do feel for him – sometimes literally. At 10-ish years old, Lucifer is definitely the Elder Statescat of the household and he never lets us forget it!

For anyone wondering about how the rest of the clowder stack up on the cat chonk chart, George is a Fine Boi, Luna is a Fine Girl, and the still-feuding Hecate and Tuna are both Heckin’ Chonks.
